Tom is a Managing Partner and co-founder of Gobi Partners, a venture capital firm headquartered in Shanghai and with offices in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Established in 2002, Gobi is a leading investor in digital media, IT and TMT companies in China and ASEAN. To date, Gobi has funded more than 170 companies and is currently investing its eighth fund.
Tom has participated in the development of several leading companies such as Brite Semiconductor (strategic investment from SMIC:0981.HK), Camera360, CiB (acquired by AsiaSoft), CSDN, Line0, Madhouse (acquired by BlueFocus:300058.SZ), MainSpring, Opzoon (acquired by Harbin Gong Da:600701.SH), Tuniu (NASDAQ:TOUR), World Traveller and Yoyi Digital—often times serving on the company’s board of directors. Previously, Tom was also the former CEO and a Director of DMG (acquired by NASDAQ:VISN), the largest operator of passenger information systems and digital media networks inside China’s subways. At DMG, Tom was the executive producer for the company’s award winning A Sunny Day, Dancing Without You, and A Starry Night programs, the world’s first series of subway soap operas sponsored respectively by Starbucks, Nine West and the MDA of Singapore. He also helped create Gobi’s Oasis Program, one of China’s earliest incubation initiatives, whose list of successfully nurtured startups include GoKuai, NetQin (NYSE:NQ), Teambition, and Zhiyoula.com.
Over the years, Tom has been a featured speaker at several influential business and industry events, including those hosted by China’s National Development and Reform Commission, the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Harvard Business School, IBM, London School of Economics, Shanghai’s Municipal Government, Stanford Business School, the World Bank and the World Islamic Economic Forum. He was named to the Forbes List of “China’s Top Venture Capitalists” in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Prior to Gobi, Tom was a founder of the Beijing Technology Development Fund, sponsored by Beijing Enterprises and Tsinghua University Enterprise Group, where he facilitated investments into CommerceOne, MyRice and SiRF. In 2001, Tom led the US$72 million merger of Hong Kong-based Asia2B (backed by Beijing Enterprises, Jardine Matheson, New World, Sun Hung Kai, Swire Pacific, and Wharf) and Singapore-based SESAMi (backed by Singapore Telecom), the largest Asian new economy merger at the time. He subsequently worked as Vice Chairman of the combined entity.
Prior to that, Tom was a director at Dresdner Kleinwort Benson (China) covering the TMT sectors. In 1999, Tom served as the Independent Advisor to First Pacific on its US$285 million acquisition of Indofood. From 1996 to 1998, Tom worked for Seapower Financial Services in Hong Kong where he was the head of Corporate Strategy and set up the firm’s Asset Management department. He also helped run the top rated Asian Smaller Companies Fund as ranked by Lipper. Tom started his career as an investment banker in the Financial Institutions Group with Merrill Lynch in New York and Hong Kong. He worked on numerous M&A transactions and developed relationships with banks in Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Tom is a graduate of Harvard College where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.
In addition to his work at Gobi Partners, Tom is the founder of Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) China, a non-profit organization aimed at providing internship opportunities for underserved college students which is modeled after SEO in the US. He also serves as a board member of the Presidential Scholars Foundation which cultivates, connects and celebrates U.S. Presidential Scholars (161 of the nation’s top high school graduates who are selected annually and honored by the White House). He was elected as a Vice Chairman of the Pudong Venture Capital Association in March 2010 and served as a member of the Development Committee for Zhangjiang High-Tech Park. Of note, Tom was the inspiration behind Seinfeld’s popular “Movie Phone” TV episode.
Don joined Gobi in 2008, and primarily focuses on online travel and other e-commerce opportunities. Don is a certified Project Management Professional with extensive management, operational and technical experience in online businesses. Prior to joining Gobi, Don was senior director of web and planning at eLong, one of the largest online travel service companies in China that was acquired by Expedia. He has over ten years of experience in software engineering, project management, user experience enhancement and web product management.
Ken joined Gobi Partners in 2003, and was promoted to partner in 2007. He helped raise Gobi's first RMB fund from Tianjin High Tech Group. His work on the investment side covers areas such as wireless applications, location-based services (LBS), mobile SNS, and cloud computing. Ken is also an active figure in the Chinese start-up community, acting as a mentor/advisor for a variety of entrepreneurial associations and accelerator programs, such as Microsoft BizSpark, ZGC Angel Investment Alliance, iHeima, and Feimalv. He has extensive experience in multiple industries, including information technology (IT), financial services, real estate, and construction. Ken holds a B.S. in Management Engineering from Tongji University in Shanghai, and an MSc in Economics and Finance from the University of York in the United Kingdom.
Michael joined Gobi in 2003, and is based in Shanghai, where he focuses on smart hardware, e-learning, innovative finance as well as enterprise cloud service sectors. Michael has over 12 years of experience in venture capital and has led numerous investments incl. PICOOC, iKair, Cloudwise, Gokuai, Teambition, iGrow and Quark Finance. He is a partner on the Gobi Yingzhi Fund of RMB 410 million, for which he led the fundraising effort in 2011. Michael graduated from Donghua University in Shanghai with a B.A. in Computer Automation.
KAY MOK KU
Kay-Mok joined Gobi in 2010 and has invested in over 30 companies, including Aptoide, DeClout, Eko, Hermo, Offpeak, Orami, and Qraved. He is a board member of the Singapore Venture Capital Association (SVCA). Prior to his career with Gobi Partners, Mok held the Vice President position in both Xinya Media and MediaCorp (Singapore). He was also part of the team that managed a $500 million fund at the Media Development Authority in Singapore, and is co-founder of Private Express, which was based in the Silicon Valley. He started his career with the Infocomm Development Authority, and has a Computer Science degree from UC-Berkeley, and an MBA from San Jose State University.
WAI KIT LAU
FOUNDING PARTNER, SENIOR ADVISOR
Wai Kit is a co-founder of Gobi. He is a qualified lawyer in Hong Kong, the State of California (USA), England & Wales, as well as Singapore. He has over two decades of experience in corporate and investment management, and has accumulated extensive experience in structuring and executing foreign investments in China. Wai Kit served as an assessor of the Small Entrepreneur Research Assistant Program, Innovation and Technology Fund of the Hong Kong government from 2000 to 2006.
Jamaludin Bujang has eighteen (18) years of corporate experience in the private sector and five (5) years of experience in the public sector. He was appointed as the CEO and Board Member of Malaysia Venture Capital Management Bhd. (MAVCAP) on 1 November 2011. Jamal worked with 2 foreign-based finance institutions for a cumulative period of 3 years and spent 13 years in Malaysia's leading investment bank, with extensive exposure to investment banking, particularly in equity research, asset and investment evaluation, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions. Senior management expertise gained from leading a support division (in finance, legal, corporate communications & planning, CT and administration) has sharpened his technical and public relations skills. His tenure in a leading investment bank saw his participation in formulating and implementing sound investment strategies and initiatives.
Prior to joining MAVCAP, Jamaludin was the Director Investment Division Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) where he led the Evaluation & Nurturing and the Monitoring & Compliance departments. He was responsible for corporate topline KPIs as well as achieving targets for dealflow, portfolio performance, CSR and others. He was tasked to evaluate investment proposals from various sectors of the economy. During his tenure in MTDC, he initiated and executed the implementation of investment database system.
Jamaludin graduated with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration (Economics) from Wichita State University, Kansas, United States and a Masters degree in Business Law (Executive) from International Islamic University, Kuala Lumpur.
Alex joined Gobi in 2016 and focuses on the hardware/augmented reality and virtual reality and agriculture-related sectors. Prior to his career with Gobi, Alex gained experience in the Internet industry, dealing with e-commerce, online advertising SEO, and O2O by working for Alibaba as their Senior Product Manager and was a co-founding member of their products and operations departments. He was also a Product Director of Fanli.com, the largest rebate website in China. Alex received his B.S. in Automotive Studies from Shanghai Tongji University in China and his MSc in Finance from the University of New South Wales in Australia.
Bella joined Gobi Partners in 2016. She currently focuses on the consumer, O2O, finance and education sectors. Prior to joining Gobi, Bella held positions at PwC, Bank of China and the Energy Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission. She also worked as a Capstone Project Consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank, conducting economic and industry research, and providing financial solutions to clients by building comprehensive financial models and scenarios. Bella received her Master's Degree in Public Administration from Columbia University in the US, where she majored in International Finance and Economic Policy.
Bill joined Gobi in 2015, and focuses on the Internet of Things (IoT), automobile and urban agriculture sectors. Since joining Gobi, Bill has participated in the firm's investments into Hangzhou Indoor-Grow Agriculture and Beijing Leijia Technology. He has over 3 years of experience in strategic consulting firms and venture capital, as well as the telecommunications, media and financial sectors. Prior to his career with Gobi, Bill worked for Ernst & Young as an Associate, helping MNC clients with strategic planning and operations performance. He holds a Bachelor's of Finance from Zhejiang University in China and a Master's Degree of Finance from Tulane University in the UK.
Carol joined Gobi in 2016 and is responsible for due diligence auditing, portfolio management and funds' reporting of Gobi's portfolio companies. Prior to Gobi, Carol worked as a senior associate in PwC Beijing for 5 years and obtained her CPA qualifications. At PwC, Carol accumulated extensive experience on statutory financial statement audits and IPO audits in multiple industries, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and TMT. She studied at the China Foreign Affairs University, where she received her Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Economics.
Chibo joined Gobi in 2009. He is based in Shanghai, and currently focuses on the consumer, sports, and media sectors in China. In Hong Kong, he helps to manage the Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, and travels frequently to meet with various startups related to the Alibaba ecosystem. Chibo has accumulated extensive experience in professional services, local startups, and Fortune 500 companies. He started his career as a strategy consultant with Monitor Group, where he worked across ASEAN and MENA. He also gained valuable operations experience at DMG (a Gobi portfolio company), where he was VP-Corporate Development, and at Robert Bosch, where he was Senior Manager of Corporate Strategy in Asia Pacific. Chibo received his B.A. in Applied Mathematics and Economics from Harvard University. He currently serves on the Board of the Harvard Club of Shanghai.
CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
Filippo joined Gobi in 2004 and is the General Partner's CFO, responsible for the financial and accounting aspects of the Fund's investment activities. He also takes the lead in financial due diligence on investment targets. Filippo is a qualified CPA in China and worked at Ernst & Young for five years. He is experienced in the Chinese accounting and taxation systems for both domestic and foreign investment enterprises. Prior to joining Gobi, Filippo conducted regular audits, and led pre-IPO and M&A due diligence efforts in his own accounting practice. Filippo is also a founding member and President of the China Venture Capital Finance Organization (CVCFO), which has over 450 members from the finance departments of over 250 venture capital and private equity GPs in China.
Jennifer joined Gobi in 2015, and is responsible for fund financials and accounting management for both the firm and its portfolio companies. Jennifer has nearly 10 years of experience in both consulting firms and corporations. Prior to Gobi, she worked for Tishman Speyer as an accounting supervisor. She also worked at Deloitte Tohmatsu for more than 4 years, and focused mainly on the TMT and real estate sectors. Jennifer received her Bachelor's Degree of International Accounting from the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.
John is responsible for overseeing the international PR activities of Gobi and its portfolio companies and is based out of San Francisco. Prior to joining Gobi, John worked at North Head and MSLGROUP in Beijing, providing corporate communications and public affairs consulting services for Fortune 500 companies operating in China. John began his career at Voice of America in Washington, DC as part of VOA’s Mandarin Services. John received his B.A. in International Studies from Ohio University, with minors in Anthropology and History.
Kenneth joined Gobi in 2014, and was previously an intern at Gobi's Shanghai office. Prior to his career with Gobi, Kenneth was a business development executive of an e-commerce platform that focused on Japanese products. He graduated with a B.B.A. from the National University of Singapore in 2016.
Lawrence is a co-founding partner of Gobi and has over fifteen years of experience in the venture capital industry. Prior to Gobi, he served as an Associate at the WI Harper Group where he helped to identify, evaluate, and pursue early-stage technology and media investments. Lawrence received his B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a second major in Managerial Economics from Carnegie Mellon University. He also received his M.S. in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management from Stanford University. Currently, he serves as a Director of the Shanghai Chinese Overseas Friendship Association.
Lisa joined Gobi in 2016 and manages Gobi's Oasis Program, a platform created by Gobi which provides young Internet/mobile Internet entrepreneurs with financial and professional support. Lisa has nearly 6 years of experience in the corporate PR/communications areas across the TMT and VC/PE industries, and also holds a counselor qualification certificate. Prior to Gobi, Lisa worked for TechWeb, Zero2IPO Group, and Sogou. She received her Bachelor's Degree from Bohai University.
Luna joined Gobi in 2015 and drives brand building activities for Gobi and the Oasis Program, (a platform created by Gobi which provides young Internet/mobile Internet entrepreneurs with financial and professional support). With broad experience in the PR and marketing industries, one of Luna's key roles in this position is to provide strategic counseling to Gobi's portfolio companies in helping them grow brand image and awareness. Prior to Gobi, Luna served as the Director at Ogilvy PR, where she covered an extensive portfolio of key technology clients such as Intel. She has also previously worked at Edelman's Tech practice. Luna graduated from the Central University of Finance and Economics, where she majored in International Finance.
Macy joined Gobi in 2007. She is responsible for supporting the entire firm's HR projects, e.g. high-potential staff development, campus recruiting, team management and staff hiring. Prior to Gobi, she worked with the American Chamber of Commerce in China as a business visa associate. She had five years of administrative and HR work experience in Chinese enterprises and foreign companies before joining Gobi.
MADIHAH BINTI AHMAD RAZAE
Madihah joined Gobi in early 2016, and is assisting the team with market research, due diligence, and deal sourcing in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on the TaqwaTech sector. She also helps the team with monitoring the performance of Gobi’s portfolio companies. Prior to Gobi, she was a Senior Executive at Malaysia Venture Capital Management Berhad (MAVCAP), Malaysia’s largest venture capital firm and a company wholly owned by the Malaysian Ministry of Finance (MOF). Before MAVCAP, Madihah spent 3 years in an Islamic private equity boutique firm, ACA Amanie Sdn. Bhd., which was a startup that has ACA Investments Pte. Ltd. And Amanie Advisors, Malaysia’s leading Shariah advisory firm as its parent companies. At ACA Amanie, she focused on fundraising, market research and due diligence for the greentech industry. She began her career by spending 2 years conducting Malaysian stock market analysis, specializing in the consumer industry covering companies such as Parkson, Aeon, and Amway. Madihah is a graduate from the University of Illinois, US, with a BSc in Actuarial Science. She also holds a Master’s of Applied Statistics from Universiti Malaya in Malaysia. She is currently a CFA Level III Exam candidate and a half marathon runner in her spare time, competing in events such as the Kuala Lumpur and Bali Marathons.
Nadia joined Gobi in 2016. She has 4 years of working experience in the chemical industry, and more recently as a Citibusiness Associate at Citibank, where she spearheaded the FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) implementation with 100% High Priority Completion in CitiBusiness Indonesia. She holds a BSc. in Biochemistry from Trinity College, Cambridge University in the UK.
Rita joined Gobi in 2013, and is primarily responsible for legal affairs related to investments and Gobi's portfolio companies. Prior to joining Gobi, she spent several years in an energy investment company and took part in many projects, including the reorganization and acquisition of Hong Sheng Energy Development Investment Group Co. and the Geng Yang Industrial Group, among others. Rita received her Bachelor of Laws from First Military Medical University. She has a Legal Qualification Certificate, as well as a Fund Qualification Certificate.
CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER
Russell joined Gobi in 2003 and is responsible for Gobi's day-to-day operations management. Prior to Gobi, he was with Shanghai Interants Technology, where he served as Marketing Manager, and Shanghai Xinjian Instrument Equipment, where he served as the IT Supervisor. Russell holds a Diploma of Computer Management from Fudan University. He spent 3 years with China's PLA (People's Liberation Army) where he was awarded a 3rd class medal with honors. In his leisure time, Russell enjoys basketball, soccer and hiking.
Sandy joined Gobi in 2002. She is responsible for the management of office operations, and also works closely with Gobi's portfolio companies on banking, regulatory compliance and corporate secretarial matters. Prior to Gobi, she was an executive assistant at WI Harper Group, Asia2B.com Holdings, and Seapower Financial Services Group. In her free time, Sandy enjoys listening to music and travelling.
Shafinaz joined Gobi in 2016. She has 4 years of experience in PR in the Malaysian government and private sectors, and prior to her career with Gobi, was a Senior Executive in the Corporate Communications Division of the Land Public Transport Commission Malaysia (SPAD) and a Public Relations Associate at the online retail startup Lazada Malaysia. Shafinaz holds a B.Comm. from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), where she majored in Advertising.
Soo Wei Shaw
Soo Wei is a Venture Partner of Gobi ASEAN. She has accumulated extensive experience in the film and digital media sectors in both Hong Kong and Singapore. Previously, Soo Wei was Executive Director of the Hong Kong Film Festival as well as Screen Singapore. She has also worked at the Singapore Media Development Authority, SPH Media Works, and Catcha Media Group. Soo Wei received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Oxford University.
Stephen joined Gobi in 2015 and focuses on Internet finance, cross-border e-commerce, logistics and recruitment services. Stephen has 4 years of experience in public market equities and venture capital. Prior to Gobi, Stephen worked for Fosun Financial Group. He received his Master's Degree in Financial Math at Fudan University and has a double Bachelor's Degree in Applied Math & International Trade from Jiatong University in Shanghai.
Sylvia joined Gobi in 2014. Prior to her career with Gobi, Sylvia was the senior analyst at Trends Media Group, where she focused on internal strategy and operations management, as well as investment opportunities in the media and fashion industries. She also has previously worked at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and Burson-Marsteller. Sylvia holds a Bachelor's Degree in Finance from Peking University in China.
Terrence joined Gobi in 2016. He currently focuses on new technology (AI/AR/VR) and B2B services. Terrence also has previous experience in consulting and investment banking firms. Prior to Gobi, Terrence worked for Solaris Capital Partners in Shanghai. Terrence received his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Jiatong University in Shanghai. During his school days, Terrence also became an exchange student at Cambridge University in the UK and Columbia University in the US.
Tony joined Gobi in 2016. He currently focuses on the consumer, media, overseas services and sport sectors and also assists the team on the Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund. Prior to Gobi, Tony worked in PwC and Evotech Capital, and was responsible for auditing, financial analysis, and due diligence work. He received his Master's Degree in Finance from the University of Rochester in the US and his Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Donghua University in China. He is also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma.
Tony joined Gobi's Hong Kong office in 2016 and currently focuses on the startup eco-system in the city. He helps to manage the Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund (AHKEF) and covers high potential startups within the Pearl River Delta technology ecosystem. Tony accumulated extensive experience in growing high-tech businesses from his two startups related to financial technology (FinTech) and big data for fashion. He was in charge of the overall product roadmap and management, business development, operation, technical infrastructure design & implementation, user experience design as well as fund raising of the companies.Tony received his B.Eng. in Computer Engineering and B.B.A. in Financial Engineering from the double degree programme in The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Victor joined Gobi in early 2015. He was an Investment Manager with Malaysia Venture Capital Management (“MAVCAP”), Malaysia’s largest venture capital firm and a company wholly owned by the Ministry of Finance of Malaysia, where he invested in early stage high growth tech companies. He was also associated with 500 Startups, through their ASEAN extension, 500 Durians. Prior to that, he had several years of investment consulting experience with Towers Watson, where his portfolio of clients were sovereign wealth funds, pension funds and other institutional entities in Southeast Asia. With the experience of researching and evaluating the capabilities of different asset managers around the region, he brings onto the table insights which will help the firm in upholding best practices in investment process. He also founded a few online and offline ventures which has provided him with hands on entrepreneurial experience. Victor is a graduate of Macquarie University, Sydney with a Bachelor of Commerce in Actuarial Studies, a CFA charterholder, and is also a member of Mensa Malaysia. He is currently the Honorary Secretary of the Malaysia Venture Capital Association ("MVCA").
Wei joined Gobi in 2008 and was made a Partner of Gobi Tianjin in 2013. He has operational experience in several industries, including medical, manufacturing, and engineering, as well as in China's state-owned venture capital enterprises. At Gobi, Wei concentrates on sectors such as the Internet, data communications, intelligent manufacturing and green technology. He has also been active in the venture capital arena -- including serving as a mentor and on the review committee of IBM's Smartcamp Global Entrepreneur Training Camp. Wei graduated from Tianjin University of Technology in China, where he majored in mechanical manufacturing. He also holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Nankai University and a PhD in Management and Industrial Engineering from Tianjin University.
Wing joined Gobi in 2011. He currently focuses on the cloud computing/enterprise services, O2O, car-related services, smart devices and mobile Internet sectors. Prior to joining Gobi, Wing had several years of experience with the Martec Group as a project manager. He has extensive experience and knowledge in fine chemicals, new materials and electric vehicles. He has also previously worked for several Global Fortune 500 companies including Dow, Henkel, DuPont, Honeywell and Corning. Wing holds a B.A. in Chemical Engineering from Shanghai Jiatong University in China.
Wynne joined Gobi in 2010 and devotes most of her time to handling the corporate, secretarial and legal affairs of portfolio companies. Prior to Gobi, she gained valuable experience in a real estate law practice where she facilitated the successful development and opening of Plaza 353, Nanjing Road, Shanghai. Wynne received her Bachelor's Degree in Economics/Law from the East China University of Political Science and Law, where she also played active roles in the student union and psychology club.
