Tom is a Managing Partner and co-founder of Gobi Partners, a venture capital firm headquartered in Shanghai and with offices in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Established in 2002, Gobi is a leading investor in digital media, IT and TMT companies in China and ASEAN. To date, Gobi has funded more than 150 companies and is currently investing its eighth fund.
Tom has participated in the development of several leading companies such as Brite Semiconductor (strategic investment from SMIC:0981.HK), Camera360, CiB (acquired by AsiaSoft), CSDN, Line0, Madhouse (acquired by BlueFocus:300058.SZ), MainSpring, Opzoon (acquired by Harbin Gong Da:600701.SH), Tuniu (NASDAQ:TOUR), World Traveller and Yoyi Digital—often times serving on the company’s board of directors. Previously, Tom was also the former CEO and a Director of DMG (acquired by NASDAQ:VISN), the largest operator of passenger information systems and digital media networks inside China’s subways. At DMG, Tom was the executive producer for the company’s award winning A Sunny Day, Dancing Without You, and A Starry Night programs, the world’s first series of subway soap operas sponsored respectively by Starbucks, Nine West and the MDA of Singapore. He also helped create Gobi’s Oasis Program, one of China’s earliest incubation initiatives, whose list of successfully nurtured startups include GoKuai, NetQin (NYSE:NQ), Teambition, and Zhiyoula.com.
Over the years, Tom has been a featured speaker at several influential business and industry events, including those hosted by China’s National Development and Reform Commission, the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Harvard Business School, IBM, London School of Economics, Shanghai’s Municipal Government, Stanford Business School, the World Bank and the World Islamic Economic Forum. He was named to the Forbes List of “China’s Top Venture Capitalists” in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Prior to Gobi, Tom was a founder of the Beijing Technology Development Fund, sponsored by Beijing Enterprises and Tsinghua University Enterprise Group, where he facilitated investments into CommerceOne, MyRice and SiRF. In 2001, Tom led the US$72 million merger of Hong Kong-based Asia2B (backed by Beijing Enterprises, Jardine Matheson, New World, Sun Hung Kai, Swire Pacific, and Wharf) and Singapore-based SESAMi (backed by Singapore Telecom), the largest Asian new economy merger at the time. He subsequently worked as Vice Chairman of the combined entity.
Prior to that, Tom was a director at Dresdner Kleinwort Benson (China) covering the TMT sectors. In 1999, Tom served as the Independent Advisor to First Pacific on its US$285 million acquisition of Indofood. From 1996 to 1998, Tom worked for Seapower Financial Services in Hong Kong where he was the head of Corporate Strategy and set up the firm’s Asset Management department. He also helped run the top rated Asian Smaller Companies Fund as ranked by Lipper. Tom started his career as an investment banker in the Financial Institutions Group with Merrill Lynch in New York and Hong Kong. He worked on numerous M&A transactions and developed relationships with banks in Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Tom is a graduate of Harvard College where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.
In addition to his work at Gobi Partners, Tom is the founder of Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) China, a non-profit organization aimed at providing internship opportunities for underserved college students which is modeled after SEO in the US. He also serves as a board member of the Presidential Scholars Foundation which cultivates, connects and celebrates U.S. Presidential Scholars (161 of the nation’s top high school graduates who are selected annually and honored by the White House). He was elected as a Vice Chairman of the Pudong Venture Capital Association in March 2010 and served as a member of the Development Committee for Zhangjiang High-Tech Park. Of note, Tom was the inspiration behind Seinfeld’s popular “Movie Phone” TV episode.
Don joined Gobi in 2008, and primarily focuses on online travel and other e-commerce opportunities. Don is a certified Project Management Professional with extensive management, operational and technical experience in online businesses. Prior to joining Gobi, Don was senior director of web and planning at eLong, one of the largest online travel service companies in China that was acquired by Expedia. He has over ten years of experience in software engineering, project management, user experience enhancement and web product management.
Born and raised in Shanghai, Ken joined Gobi Partners in 2003 and was promoted to partner in 2007. Ken managed to help raised Gobi’s first RMB fund from Tianjin High Tech Group. On the investment side, he covers areas such as wireless applications, LBS technology services, mobile SNS and cloud infrastructures. Ken is also an active figure in the China start-up community. He is a mentor/advisor for various entrepreneurs associations and acceleration programs, such as Microsoft BizSpark, ZGC Angel Investment Alliance, iHeima, Feimalv.
Ken has extensive experience in multiple industries including IT, financial services, real estate, and construction. Ken holds a B.S. in Management Engineering from Tongji University in Shanghai and an MSc in Economics and Finance from the University of York in the United Kingdom.
Michael joined Gobi in 2003, and is based in Shanghai, where he focuses on smart hardware, e-learning, innovative finance as well as enterprise cloud service sectors. Michael has over 12 years of experience in venture capital and has led numerous investments incl. PICOOC, iKair, Cloudwise, Gokuai, Teambition, iGrow and Quark Finance. He is a partner on the Gobi Yingzhi Fund of RMB 410 million, for which he led the fundraising effort in 2011. Michael graduated from Donghua University in Shanghai with a B.A. in Computer Automation.
KAY MOK KU
Kay-Mok joined Gobi in 2010. His previous work experience includes VP of Business Development positions in Xinya Media and MediaCorp, the national broadcaster of Singapore. Prior to that, he was part of a team that managed a S$500 million interactive digital media fund at the Media Development Authority. He has also lived in Silicon Valley for over 10 years, where he co-founded Private Express Inc. He started his career with the Infocomm Development Authority, and has a Computer Science degree from UC-Berkeley, and an MBA from San Jose State University.
WAI KIT LAU
FOUNDING PARTNER, SENIOR ADVISOR
Wai Kit is a co-founder of the General Partner. He is a qualified lawyer in Hong Kong, State of California (USA), England & Wales, and Singapore. He has over two decades of experience in corporate and investment management, and has accumulated extensive experience in structuring and executing foreign investments in China. Wai Kit served as an assessor of the Small Entrepreneur Research Assistance Program, Innovation and Technology Fund of the Hong Kong Government from 2000 to 2006.
Jamaludin Bujang has eighteen (18) years of corporate experience in the private sector and five (5) years of experience in the public sector. He was appointed as the CEO and Board Member of Malaysia Venture Capital Management Bhd. (MAVCAP) on 1 November 2011. Jamal worked with 2 foreign-based finance institutions for a cumulative period of 3 years and spent 13 years in Malaysia's leading investment bank, with extensive exposure to investment banking, particularly in equity research, asset and investment evaluation, corporate finance, mergers and acquisitions. Senior management expertise gained from leading a support division (in finance, legal, corporate communications & planning, CT and administration) has sharpened his technical and public relations skills. His tenure in a leading investment bank saw his participation in formulating and implementing sound investment strategies and initiatives.
Prior to joining MAVCAP, Jamaludin was the Director Investment Division Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) where he led the Evaluation & Nurturing and the Monitoring & Compliance departments. He was responsible for corporate topline KPIs as well as achieving targets for dealflow, portfolio performance, CSR and others. He was tasked to evaluate investment proposals from various sectors of the economy. During his tenure in MTDC, he initiated and executed the implementation of investment database system.
Jamaludin graduated with a Bachelor degree in Business Administration (Economics) from Wichita State University, Kansas, United States and a Masters degree in Business Law (Executive) from International Islamic University, Kuala Lumpur.
Alex joined Gobi Partners in 2016. He is based in Shanghai and currently focuses on Agri-Tech, Enterprise Services, Automobile sectors. Prior to joining Gobi, Alex was Product Director of Fanli.com, the largest rebate website in China. Prior to that, Alex worked in Alibaba as a product manager. Alex has extensive experience in ecommerce, online ADs, search engine and O2O. Alex received his Master’s Degree in Finance from the University of New South Wales and Bachelor's Degrees in Automation from Tongji University in Shanghai.
Bella joined Gobi Beijing office in 2016, and currently focused on consumption upgrade, finance and education sector.
Prior to joining Gobi, Bella gained extensive experience from Bank of China, PwC, and Energy Research Institute of National Development and Reform Commission. She also worked as a graduate capstone consultant for Inter-American Development Bank, conducting economic and industry research, and providing financing solutions through building comprehensive financial models and scenarios.
Bella is a graduate from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs with a master degree in Public Administration, concentrating on International Finance and Energy and Environment.
Bill joined Gobi in 2015. He is based in Shanghai and currently focuses on the IoT, Automobile and Urban-Agriculture sectors. Bill has participated in the investment of Hangzhou Indoor-Grow Agriculture and Beijing Lejia Technology since he joined Gobi. Prior to Gobi, Bill worked at EY (Ernst & Young) Consulting, helping MNC clients with strategic planning and operational performance. He has significant experience in the telecommunications, media and financial sectors. Bill received his master's degree in Finance from Tulane University and B.S. in Finance from Zhejiang University.
Carol joined Gobi's Beijing office in 2016 and is currently responsible of Gobi’s portfolios’ Due Diligence Investigation, portfolio management and funds’ reporting. Carol has been working as a senior associate in PwC Beijing for 5 years from 2011 to 2016 and obtained CPA qualification. During working in PwC， Carol has accumulated extensive experience in statutory financial statement audit and IPO audit in multiple industries such as agricultural, manufacturing and TMT related areas. Graduated from China Foreign Affairs University, Carol received Bachelor Degree and Master degree in Economics in 2009 and 2011 after 6 years of study in CFAU.
Chibo joined Gobi in 2009. He is based in Shanghai, and currently focuses on the consumer, sports, and media sectors in China. In Hong Kong, he helps to manage the Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, and travels frequently to meet with various startups related to the Alibaba ecosystem. Chibo has accumulated extensive experience in professional services, local startups, and Fortune 500 companies. He started his career as a strategy consultant with Monitor Group, where he worked across ASEAN and MENA. He also gained valuable operations experience at DMG (a Gobi portfolio company), where he was VP-Corporate Development, and at Robert Bosch, where he was Senior Manager of Corporate Strategy in Asia Pacific. Chibo received his B.A. in Applied Mathematics and Economics from Harvard University. He currently serves on the Board of the Harvard Club of Shanghai.
CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
Filippo Huang, CFO. Filippo is the General Partner’s CFO responsible for the financial and accounting aspects of the Fund’s investment activities. He also takes the lead in financial due diligence on investment targets. Filippo is a qualified CPA in China and worked at Ernst & Young for five years. He is experienced in the Chinese accounting and taxation systems for both domestic and foreign investment enterprises. In addition to conducting regular audits, Filippo also led pre-IPO and M&A due diligence efforts in his accounting practice prior to joining Gobi.
Jennifer joined Gobi's Shanghai office in 2015. She is responsible for financial and accounting management in Shanghai. Prior to joining Gobi, Jennifer worked at Tishman Speyer as an accounting supervisor, to make sure the overall smooth running of the accounting operations for the project. Jennifer previously worked at Deloitte for more than four years and she mainly focused on the fields of TMT and Real Estate. She has extensive experience in dealing with accounting systems for both domestic and foreign enterprises. Jennifer received her B.A. in International Accounting from University of Shanghai for Science and Technology.
John is responsible for overseeing the international PR activities of Gobi and its portfolio companies and is based out of Shanghai. Prior to joining Gobi, John worked at North Head and MSLGROUP in Beijing, providing corporate communications and public affairs consulting services for Fortune 500 companies operating in China. John began his career at Voice of America in Washington, DC as part of VOA’s Mandarin Services. John received his B.A. in International Studies from Ohio University, with minors in Anthropology and History.
Kenneth is an associate for Gobi Partners in ASEAN and is based in Singapore. He joined the firm in 2014, where he helped source deals in Mainland China out of the Shanghai office, also helping senior colleagues conduct market research, due diligence and support investor relations initiatives. Kenneth is currently working with the Gobi ASEAN team in Southeast Asia to discover promising companies and enhance the firm's regional presence. Kenneth is currently finishing his BBA at the National University of Singapore.
Lawrence is a co-founding partner of Gobi and is based in Hong Kong.
Lawrence has over twelve years of experience in the venture capital industry. Prior to Gobi, he served as an Associate at the WI Harper Group where he helped to identify, evaluate and pursue early-stage technology and media investments.
Lawrence received his B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a second major in Managerial Economics from Carnegie Mellon University. He received his M.S. in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management from Stanford University. He currently also serves as a Director of the Shanghai Chinese Overseas Friendship Association.
Lisa Yu joined Gobi in 2016，mainly responsible for PR and branding of both Gobi and Gobi's portfolio. Now, she is based in Beijing office. Lisa has rich experience in media communication and branding.She has a deep understanding of the needs of entrepreneurs in different area, and knows the value of a venture capital, which help her better serves Gobi’s portfolio. Prior to Gobi, Lisa served in Zero2IPO Group and Sogou. Lisa graduated from the Bohai University and has got a counselor qualification certificate.
Luna is responsible for leading brand building initiatives and activities for Gobi Partners and the firm’s Oasis Program, a platform that helps accelerate angel investments for young entrepreneurs. With ample experience in the PR and marketing industry, one of Luna’s key roles in this position is to provide strategic counseling to Gobi’s portfolio companies in helping them establish brand image and build awareness.
Prior to Gobi Partners, Luna served as director at Ogilvy PR, where she covered an extensive portfolio of key technology clients such as Intel. In this role, Luna’s primary responsibilities included Intel corporate communications, as well as product PR for Intel Ultrabook and 2in1s. Luna also led brand communications for Intel Capital in China.
Luna worked at Edelman’s Tech practice before joining Ogilvy. Luna is a graduate of the Central University of Finance and Economics, majoring in International Finance.
Macy joined Gobi Partners in 2007. Prior to Gobi, she worked with the American Chamber of Commerce in China as receptionist and business visa associate. She has had five years of administrative and HR work experience in Chinese enterprises and foreign companies. Born and raised in Beijing, Macy is familiar with Beijing local policies and regulations. She graduated from Beijing City University with a B.A. in Economic Management.
MADIHAH BINTI AHMAD RAZAE
Madihah joined Gobi in early 2016, and is assisting the team with market research, due diligence, and deal sourcing in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on the TaqwaTech sector. She also helps the team with monitoring the performance of Gobi’s portfolio companies. Prior to Gobi, she was a Senior Executive at Malaysia Venture Capital Management Berhad (MAVCAP), Malaysia’s largest venture capital firm and a company wholly owned by the Malaysian Ministry of Finance (MOF). Before MAVCAP, Madihah spent 3 years in an Islamic private equity boutique firm, ACA Amanie Sdn. Bhd., which was a startup that has ACA Investments Pte. Ltd. And Amanie Advisors, Malaysia’s leading Shariah advisory firm as its parent companies. At ACA Amanie, she focused on fundraising, market research and due diligence for the greentech industry. She began her career by spending 2 years conducting Malaysian stock market analysis, specializing in the consumer industry covering companies such as Parkson, Aeon, and Amway. Madihah is a graduate from the University of Illinois, US, with a BSc in Actuarial Science. She also holds a Master’s of Applied Statistics from Universiti Malaya in Malaysia. She is currently a CFA Level III Exam candidate and a half marathon runner in her spare time, competing in events such as the Kuala Lumpur and Bali Marathons.
Nadia joined Gobi in 2016. She has 4 years of working experience in the chemical industry, and more recently as a Citibusiness Associate at Citibank, where she spearheaded the FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) implementation with 100% High Priority Completion in CitiBusiness Indonesia. She holds a BSc. in Biochemistry from Trinity College, Cambridge University in the UK.
Rita joined Gobi’s Beijing office in 2013, and is primarily working for paralegal affairs in related investments and portfolio companies. Prior to joining Gobi, she spent several years in an Energy Investment Company and took part in many projects such as The Hong Sheng energy development Investment Group Co., Ltd reorganization and acquisition project, The Geng Yang Industrial Group merger Project and so on. Rita received her B.L. from The First Military Medical University. She has a Legal Professional Qualification Certificate and Fund qualification certificate.
CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER
Russell joined Gobi Partners in 2003. He is based in Shanghai, and is responsible for Gobi’s day-to-day operations management. Previously he was with Shanghai Interants Technology, where he served as Marketing Department Manager. He also served as the IT Supervisor for Shanghai Xin Jian Instrument Equipment, where he was responsible for managing distribution channels. Russell also spent three years with China’s PLA (People’s Liberation Army), where he was awarded a third-class medal with honors. Russell holds a diploma in computer management from Fudan University. In his leisure time, he enjoys basketball, soccer, and hiking.
Sandy joined Gobi in 2002. She is based in Hong Kong, and is responsible for the office operations management. In addition to providing administrative support to Gobi, Sandy also works closely with our portfolio companies on banking, regulatory compliance and corporate secretarial matters. Prior to Gobi, Sandy worked as executive assistant at WI Harper Group, Asia2B.com Holdings and Seapower Financial Services Group. In her leisure time, she enjoys music and traveling.
Shafinaz joined Gobi in 2016. She has 4 years of experience in PR in the Malaysian government and private sectors, and prior to her career with Gobi, was a Senior Executive in the Corporate Communications Division of the Land Public Transport Commission Malaysia (SPAD) and a Public Relations Associate at the online retail startup Lazada Malaysia. Shafinaz holds a B.Comm. from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), where she majored in Advertising.
Soo Wei Shaw
Soo Wei is a Venture Partner of Gobi ASEAN. She has accumulated extensive experience in the film and digital media sectors in both Hong Kong and Singapore. Previously, Soo Wei was Executive Director of the Hong Kong Film Festival as well as Screen Singapore. She has also worked at the Singapore Media Development Authority, SPH Media Works, and Catcha Media Group. Soo Wei received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Oxford University.
Stephen joined Gobi Partners in 2015. He is based in Shanghai and currently focuses on Internet finance, auto, cross-border e-commerce, and B2C service and recruitment.
In addition to his time at Gobi, Stephen has four years investment experience in secondary market and venture capital, including work experience at Guang Fa Securities, Guo Tai Jun An, CICC and Fosun Group. In these roles, Stephen accumulated expertise in industry research, fixed income, asset management and strategic investment.
Stephen received his Master's Degree in Financial Math from Fudan University and holds dual Bachelor's Degrees in Applied Math and International Trade from Shanghai Jiaotong University.
Sylvia joined Gobi in 2014. Prior to her career with Gobi, Sylvia was the senior analyst at Trends Media Group, where she focused on internal strategy and operations management, as well as investment opportunities in the media and fashion industries. She also has previously worked at Roland Berger Strategy Consultants and Burson-Marsteller. Sylvia holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Peking University in China.
Terrence joined Gobi Partners in 2016. He is based in Beijing and currently focuses on New technology sector, automobile and hardware sector. Terrence had experience in consulting firm and IBD firm like Morgan Stanley and Boston Consulting Firm. Prior to Gobi, Terrence worked in Solaris Capital Partners, a new VC firm in Shanghai. Terrence received his bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering in SJTU. During the school, Terrence has been to Cambridge University and Columbia University as exchange student.
Tony joined Gobi in 2016. He is based in Shanghai and currently focuses on consumer, media, overseas service and sports sectors. Tony also helps on Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund. Prior to Gobi, Tony worked in PWC (PricewaterhouseCoopers) and Evotech Capital and was responsible for auditing, financial analysis and due diligence work. Tony received his Master’s degree in Finance from University of Rochester and Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Donghua University. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigmma.
Tony joined Gobi's Hong Kong office in 2016 and currently focuses on the startup eco-system in the city. He helps to manage the Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund (AHKEF) and meet various high potential startups related to the Alibaba eco-system. Tony has accumulated extensive experience in growing high-tech businesses in his 2 startups about financial technology (FinTech) and big data for fashion. He was in charge of the overall product roadmap and management, business development, operation, technical infrastructure design & implementation, user experience design as well as fund raising of the companies. Tony received his B.Eng. in Computer Engineering and B.B.A. in Financial Engineering from the double degree programme in The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Victor joined Gobi in early 2015. He was an Investment Manager with Malaysia Venture Capital Management (“MAVCAP”), Malaysia’s largest venture capital firm and a company wholly owned by the Ministry of Finance of Malaysia, where he invested in early stage high growth tech companies. He was also associated with 500 Startups, through their ASEAN extension, 500 Durians. Prior to that, he had several years of investment consulting experience with Towers Watson, where his portfolio of clients were sovereign wealth funds, pension funds and other institutional entities in Southeast Asia. With the experience of researching and evaluating the capabilities of different asset managers around the region, he brings onto the table insights which will help the firm in upholding best practices in investment process. He also founded a few online and offline ventures which has provided him with hands on entrepreneurial experience. Victor is a graduate of Macquarie University, Sydney with a Bachelor of Commerce in Actuarial Studies, a CFA charterholder, and is also a member of Mensa Malaysia. He is currently the Honorary Secretary of the Malaysia Venture Capital Association ("MVCA").
Zhang joined Gobi in 2008 and was made a Partner of Gobi Tianjin in 2013. He has working experience in several industries, including medical, manufacturing, and engineering, as well as in China’s state-owned venture capital enterprises. At Gobi, Zhang concentrates on areas such as Internet, data communication, intelligent manufacturing, and green technology. He has also been active in the venture capital arena, including serving as a mentor and on the review committee of IBM’s Smartcamp Global Entrepreneur Training Camp. Zhang graduated from Tianjin University of Technology in China, where he majored in mechanical manufacturing. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Nankai University and a PhD in Management and Industrial Engineering from Tianjin University.
Wing HU joined Gobi in 2011. He is based in Shanghai, and currently focuses on the cloud computing, B2B service, big data, AI, fintech, consumption upgrade, car-related service and e-commerce sectors.
Prior to joining Gobi, Wing had several years of experience with The Martec Group as a project manager. He has accumulated extensive experience and knowledge in fine chemicals, new material and electric vehicle.He also served numerous Global Fortune 500 companies including Dow, Henkel, DuPont, Honeywell and Corning.
Wing holds a B.A. in Chemical Engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University.
Wynne devotes most of her time to handling the corporate secretarial and legal affairs of portfolio companies. Prior to joining Gobi, she gained valuable experience at a real estate law practice where she facilitated the successful development and opening of Plaza 353, Nanjing Road, Shanghai. Wynne received her B.A. in Economic Law from the East China University of Political Science and Law, where she played active roles in the student union and psychology club.
